Considered Georgia’s flagship University, the University of Georgia was ranked 20th in 2014’s best public universities. The university was founded in 1785 and was the U.S.’s first state-chartered university. Considered a Public Ivy, the University of Georgia holds strong academic recognition. The University of Georgia also prides itself in a strong academic department; especially in regards to football.
The Georgia Bulldogs’ football team competes in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The University of Georgia’s football team began in 1892 and has two national championships claimed by the university, two Heisman trophy winners, and two number one NFL draft picks. They have also appeared in 48 bowl games, which is the 5th most of all time, and have won 14 national conference championships! Needless to say, the Bulldogs have a lot to be proud of.
Home games for the Bulldogs are at Stanford Stadium at the University of Georgia’s Athens, Georgia campus. The Bulldogs are proud of their pup, which originated from the university’s first president having attended Yale. Fans are known for their badge that boasts the expression, "Eat ‘em Georgia” and features a picture of the adorable bulldog tearing a piece of cloth.
The Bulldogs have many rivalries: Auburn, Georgia Tech, Florida Gators, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Clemson, and Tennessee. The Florida vs. Georgia game is famously known as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and is filled with passionate fans from both teams. The Bulldogs, however, set themselves apart from the competition as having the third most bowl game victories.
